Hi, I'm Fer, and today I want to tell you why I fell in love with Riviera Maya all over again. It was one of those trips that brought out my inner child, and if you're traveling with kids, you'll probably understand exactly what I mean. Over five unforgettable days, I met Nickelodeon characters, laughed until I couldn't breathe at a slime party, snorkeled alongside sea turtles, and discovered that a luxury family vacation can be just as magical for parents as it is for children. If you're planning your first trip to Mexico, here's something worth knowing: Riviera Maya isn't a city but a beautiful stretch of Caribbean coastline located south of Cancun. It's home to luxury all-inclusive resorts, white-sand beaches, eco-parks, and countless family-friendly attractions. Most international travelers fly into Cancun International Airport before making their way to Riviera Maya, so if this is your first visit, don't forget to check out our complete guide on How to get to Riviera Maya.

Day 1: Check In at a Luxury Family Resort in Riviera Maya
The moment we landed in Cancun, our vacation had already begun. A shuttle from Generations Riviera Maya was waiting for us at the airport—a service included with the resort's More Inclusive® package. Even the drive felt relaxing thanks to the juices and snacks they had prepared for us, something I definitely appreciated after an early flight. About 25 minutes later, after driving through the lush Mayan jungle, we arrived at the resort. We were greeted with a glass of sparkling white wine, a refreshing lavender-scented towel, and the kind of warm smile that instantly makes you forget you've been traveling all day. If you're visiting with kids, they'll also find a welcome gift waiting in the room, which immediately put huge smiles on the little faces traveling with us. Generations Riviera Maya is a five-star all-inclusive family resort where it's honestly difficult to get bored. Besides beautiful pools and beach access, you'll find specialty restaurants, bars, a theater, Family Lounge, Kids Club, spa, fitness center, and non-motorized water activities like kayaking and snorkeling. It's the kind of place where every member of the family finds something to look forward to. One of my favorite surprises was definitely the food. The resort has several restaurants, but Habb completely stole my heart. Its minimalist design transported me straight to South Asia before I had even looked at the menu, and Chef Sanjeev made sure the experience lived up to the setting. We enjoyed chicken tikka masala, crispy samosas, and fragrant biryani that I would happily eat all over again. If you're planning to have breakfast at Chef Market or Palms on a weekend, do yourself a favor and arrive early. They get busy, and it's much nicer to enjoy your coffee without waiting in line. As for the room... wow. I stayed in an Oceanfront Swim-Up Suite, and yes, it completely won me over. It was spacious, beautifully decorated, and smelled so fresh that I wished I could bottle the scent and take it home. But my favorite part was opening the terrace door every morning and stepping straight into a semi-private pool. Those are the little moments that make a luxury vacation feel truly special. If you're looking for more details about the rooms, restaurants, and everything included in the More Inclusive® experience, I'll be sharing a complete review of Generations Riviera Maya soon.
Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancun Family Resort Experience
If you're looking for another luxury family resort in Riviera Maya, Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancun is also worth considering. What immediately caught my attention was the variety of dining options: nine restaurants and four bars, plus a full schedule of evening entertainment for adults, including salsa nights, African dance performances, disco parties, and more. But the fun doesn't stop at the restaurants. Whether you want to swim or simply spend the afternoon doing absolutely nothing, the resort's nine crystal-clear pools make it incredibly easy to slow down and enjoy the moment. And if relaxation is your priority, the Zen Spa offers a selection of treatments that are well worth booking in advance.
Families traveling with children will appreciate the KidZ Club, where younger guests can enjoy supervised activities, as well as a beachfront water park with slides that will probably keep them entertained for hours.
The resort stretches horizontally rather than vertically, making it easy to walk from one area to another. It also offers 24-hour room service, a fitness center, concierge service, laundry facilities, business spaces, and everything you'd expect from a luxury all-inclusive resort.
Activities
Day 2 & 3: Aqua Nick Family Fun and Catamaran Snorkeling Experience
One of the things I loved most about staying at Generations Riviera Maya was its More Inclusive® concept. Besides your stay, it includes experiences like a catamaran tour, snorkeling, Aqua Nick admission, cenote swimming, and eco-tourism activities, so the vacation goes far beyond the hotel itself. Our day started early at Aqua Nick, the water park inside Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Riviera Maya. Before you even reach the slides, you're welcomed by an enormous souvenir shop... so my first piece of advice is simple: bring extra room in your suitcase and a little extra money in your budget. It's almost impossible to leave empty-handed. Just outside the entrance, some of Nickelodeon's most beloved characters are waiting to greet guests. Of course, we couldn't resist taking a photo with Sandy Cheeks from SpongeBob SquarePants. Honestly, seeing characters I grew up watching instantly brought back the little girl in me. Once inside, it was impossible not to smile. The park is filled with colorful slides, a wave pool, a lazy river, themed areas inspired by SpongeBob and Paw Patrol, snack stands, and even private cabanas if parents want a quieter place to relax while the kids continue playing. Then came one of the funniest moments of the trip: the famous slime party. Without overthinking it, we joined the crowd, danced, laughed, and ended up completely covered in bright green slime. Was it messy? Absolutely. Was it worth it? One hundred percent. We also challenged ourselves to a couple of water slides—my screams made it very clear that I'm still terrified of heights—and later floated peacefully along the lazy river, forgetting about emails, deadlines, and everything happening back home. The following morning, we headed to Punta Maroma, often ranked among the world's most beautiful beaches. As soon as we arrived, I understood why. The Caribbean water was unbelievably clear, and the white sand was so soft that the kids traveling with us kept saying it felt like flour. Honestly... I couldn't stop admiring it either. Then came the moment I had been quietly dreading: snorkeling. I didn't jump into the water like everyone else. Instead, I slowly climbed down the ladder, trying to hide how nervous I was. The truth is, I hadn't snorkeled in years... and to be completely honest, I don't even know how to swim. But the moment I put my face underwater, every fear disappeared. A school of colorful tropical fish swam right in front of me, followed by a graceful sea turtle, more vibrant fish, and even a stingray gliding silently beneath us. It was one of those moments that reminds you why it's worth stepping outside your comfort zone. After such an unforgettable morning, we wrapped up the experience with a buffet lunch at Cocotales Restaurant, sharing stories about everything we had just seen beneath the surface of the Caribbean Sea.
Day 4: Family Attractions in Cancun and Evening Entertainment
If you're visiting Riviera Maya with kids, I'd definitely recommend setting aside a day for some of Cancun's family attractions. Ours included an unforgettable Cirque du Soleil show, a visit to the Interactive Aquarium Cancun, and one of the most heartwarming dolphin encounters I've ever experienced. We spent the evening at JOYÀ by Cirque du Soleil, performed at Vidanta Riviera Maya. Before the show, we had dinner at Nektar, a restaurant specializing in Yucatecan cuisine with creative cocktails and beautifully presented dishes. Watching JOYÀ while sipping champagne and enjoying gourmet canapés—salmon, goat cheese, beef carpaccio, chocolate truffles, and silky ganache—made the entire evening feel even more special. The story follows a young girl guided by her grandfather as she discovers the mysteries of the world through Mayan culture and the incredible migration of the monarch butterfly. Meanwhile, the stage comes alive with acrobats, contortionists, aerial artists, and breathtaking special effects that kept all of us completely mesmerized. The next stop was the Interactive Aquarium Cancun, home to more than 140 marine species. Walking through the exhibits was fascinating, but my favorite part was the touch tanks. Yes... I actually got to touch sea stars and sea cucumbers—please read that with the excitement of a little kid because that's exactly how I felt. We also visited the Mexican axolotl exhibit, where one tiny white axolotl completely stole my heart. I swear it looked like it was smiling at everyone who walked by. Although we didn't try it ourselves, we watched other visitors experience AquaTrek, an underwater walk that lets you explore the ocean floor wearing a special helmet that allows you to breathe normally—even if you don't know how to dive. During our visit, we also met Me'ex, the resident sea lion, who happily showed off a few impressive tricks. But without a doubt, the highlight of the day was meeting Yaxnak, a beautiful bottlenose dolphin. We had the chance to interact with her, watch her perform playful jumps, and even swim alongside her while holding onto her fin under the careful supervision of the trainers. It was one of those experiences that leaves you smiling long after it's over. After such an exciting day, we wandered through La Isla Shopping Village before having lunch at La Pizarra, a waterfront restaurant where we shared caprese salad, marinated lamb ribs, grilled portobello, and several delicious pizzas. Meanwhile, the kids were busy making their own pizzas, which might have been even more fun than eating them. Before leaving, we couldn't resist taking a few photos on the swings overlooking the lagoon.
Day 5: Experience Xenses by Xcaret with Kids
To wrap up our five-day adventure, we visited one of Grupo Xcaret's most original attractions: Xenses Insomnia, the only nighttime sensory park in Quintana Roo. Honestly, the fun started the moment we walked in. I think we spent a good five minutes trying to figure out how to get out of the bathrooms. Slightly embarrassing? Maybe. Hilarious? Absolutely. That's exactly the point of Xenses—nothing is what it seems. Even the signs are designed to confuse you, and yes... I actually drank water from what looked like a toilet inside the restroom. Don't worry, though—it was completely clean drinking water. That's just the kind of playful surprises you'll find throughout the park. One of the first attractions we explored was the Camino de Enanos y Gigantes, where perspective completely tricks your brain. You'll suddenly feel incredibly tall, then unbelievably tiny, without taking more than a few steps. Throughout the park, you'll discover more than 50 surreal settings that constantly challenge your senses. One of my favorites was Xensatorium, a pitch-black labyrinth where you rely entirely on touch, sound, and smell to find your way. It was equal parts exciting and slightly intimidating. When we finally emerged, we walked through caves surrounded by cenotes, flamingos, bats, and lush Mayan jungle scenery. Every corner felt like stepping into a different world. Our adventure continued into the famous Pueblito Chueco, where gravity suddenly becomes your biggest enemy. Walking in a straight line sounds simple... until your body completely disagrees. By the end of the experience, we reached El Edén y el Jardín Cítrico, a peaceful space filled with hammocks, floating smoke bubbles, citrus aromas, and soft music. After an afternoon of optical illusions, laughter, and sensory challenges, it was the perfect place to slow down, take a deep breath, and simply enjoy the moment before saying goodbye to an unforgettable family trip through Riviera Maya.
Tips & Planning
Planning Tips for Visiting Riviera Maya with Kids
Before packing your bags, there are a few things I wish I had known before traveling to Riviera Maya with kids. From choosing the best season to visit to budgeting for souvenirs and packing the right gear, these simple tips can make your family vacation smoother and more enjoyable
Choose the Right Time to Visit
If you're dreaming of those postcard-perfect turquoise beaches, timing really does make a difference. In my opinion, the best time to visit Riviera Maya is between November and March, when sargassum seaweed is usually at its lowest and the Caribbean looks its clearest. Cooler water temperatures and changing ocean currents help keep most of the seaweed away from the beaches during these months. If your priority is saving money, consider traveling during the low season, which generally runs from May through early December. Hotels and flights often offer discounts of 30% to 40%, making it a great option for families looking to enjoy a luxury vacation without stretching the budget quite as much.
Transportation and Reservations
One thing I appreciated about staying at both Generations Riviera Maya and Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancun was how easy everything felt once we arrived. Airport transportation can be arranged for an additional fee, and honestly, it only takes a few clicks when booking your stay. As for activities, you won't have to spend your vacation worrying about making reservations every day. Both resorts include a variety of experiences and entertainment options in their packages, so much of the planning is already done for you before you even check in.
What to Pack for Riviera Maya with Kids
Packing for Riviera Maya is actually pretty simple. Lightweight clothing, swimsuits, comfortable sandals, and aquashoes are essentials, especially if you're planning to visit beaches, cenotes, or water parks like Aqua Nick. I also recommend bringing rash guards or UV-protective swim shirts for the kids—they'll spend hours in the water without even noticing how strong the Caribbean sun can be. If snorkeling or eco-parks like Xenses or Xcaret are on your itinerary, don't forget a reef-safe sunscreen. Many natural attractions only allow mineral-based sunscreen to help protect coral reefs and marine life, so it's worth packing one before your trip.
Budget for a Few Extras
Even if you're staying at an all-inclusive resort, I'd still recommend setting aside a little extra spending money. Kids and souvenir shops are a dangerous combination—I learned that pretty quickly at Aqua Nick.
Whether it's a plush toy, an extra spa treatment, a premium excursion, or a special dinner, those little extras can easily add up. Having a small daily budget for unexpected treats lets you enjoy them without thinking twice, and sometimes those spontaneous moments end up becoming some of the best memories of the trip.
After five days exploring Riviera Maya, I came home with way more than beautiful photos. I came home with unforgettable family memories, a few funny stories, and the reminder that traveling with kids doesn't mean giving up luxury—it simply means experiencing it through a different pair of eyes. And honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way.
